Answer
The Department completed a cost benefit analysis of smart meters (CBA) in early 2023. The CBA report concluded that the case for the implementation of electricity smart meters had produced a significant level of benefit for consumers.
The Department has commenced planning the implementation of electricity smart meters. It is currently exploring the roles and responsibilities for industry, a provider has not yet been selected. Following the completion of a Design Plan report the Department will consult on the design for a roll-out later this year. The introduction of a new system requires legislation to instruct a deployment plus associated licence conditions for relevant companies.
