Answer
There is currently no commissioned service for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Northern Ireland. ADHD provision has evolved across Trusts in response to population demand and expertise within Health and Social Care teams. There is some provision available across the Health and Social Care system, but there are inconsistencies in provision and lengthy waiting times across Trusts.
In response, my Department commissioned a needs assessment on ADHD in February 2025 to inform options for a commissioned ADHD service across Trusts, subject to future budget availability. The final needs assessment was published on 12 February 2026.
Officials have undertaken an options appraisal process to identify what options could potentially be implemented in the short to medium term to help address the need for ADHD services. Further work is now being progressed on a small number of shortlisted options to inform future decisions on ADHD support. These options are intended to help address identified unmet need, increase capacity assessment and improve access to ADHD services.
Any decisions regarding future ADHD services will need to be considered in the context of overall affordability and future budget availability.
