Answer
Some cancer treatments can have a negative impact on the mouth and preventive interventions designed to counteract the increased risk of dental decay and periodontal disease. Close monitoring of oral health and early disease intervention are key elements in the oral health management of patients undergoing cancer treatment. It can be beneficial for patients to see a dentist for examination and any necessary treatment prior to starting cancer treatment. However, there are currently no plans to introduce free dental care for cancer patients.
Entitlement to free dental care is outlined in the Dental Charges Regulations (Northern Ireland). While this does not include cancer patients they may be eligible under other criteria or be able to get help with the costs under the Low Income Scheme.
Details on entitlement to free General Dental Services can be found at https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/health-service-dental-charges-and-treatments.
