Answer
The ongoing cervical cytology review has two components: a review of previous cervical screening slides (samples) and a ‘call forward’ for a new cervical smear test where a previous slide is no longer held or is no longer suitable for review. The Southern Health and Social Care Trust (SHSCT) had prioritised those slides considered to be at the highest risk, to be reviewed first. As of 13 February 2024, 1,966 slide reviews have been completed. The Trust has invited 1,463 women to attend for a new cervical smear test and 562 women have attended to date.
My department continues to work closely with PHA and SHSCT to ensure that the review is progressed in a safe and timely manner, with the intention of it being completed within the next few months.
